Vijender eyeing 'gold' in London Olympics

New Delhi, Aug 28 (UNI) After becoming the country's new heartthrob by winning the Olympics bronze in middleweight 75 kg boxing category, Vijender Kumar here today said he now aims for a gold in the 2012 London Olympics.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event of Bajaj Allianz signing up Vijender as its Youth Icon, the Haryana born pugilist said, ''This time I brought home the bronze, but now along with Bajaj Allianz, I will definitely grab the gold.'' However, the handsome pugilist clarified the speculations of being flooded with modelling assignments and said, ''Boxing will be my first priority whatever comes my way. Boxing has given me an identity, a place where I stand now.'' ''Earlier I have done some modelling assignments, and now if I get any good offer I can give sometime to it but will simultaneously carry on my boxing,'' Vijender said.

Vijender, while expressing how he felt at the moment he won, ''It was a proud and a happy moment for me when I won the bronze.'' ''My bronze was not my individual medal, but a medal for the whole country,'' he grinned.

''With the Olympics medal, I have become an inspiration for all youths in my hometown Bhiwani. More youngsters are following me, and I hope more talents will come up in the limelight like me,'' the ellubient Youth ICON said.

He further went on to credit his federation, coaches and his campatriots for his success. ''Bindra's gold has inspired me a lot.

And this has changed the focus to other sports, otherwise no other sports than cricket was ever known.'' ''Our coaches are not less than any other coaches in the world,'' he stated, adding that ''Gurbax Singh Sandhu has worked very hard to to train us to compete with world class boxers.'' Talking to UNI about his upcoming assignments, Vijender said he is concentrating on the World Championship, 2010 Commonwealth Games. ''Last year, I participated in the CWG and my performance was quite well. But this time, when we will be the hosting team, I will try hard to win the gold,'' he quipped.

While speaking in context of the event here, the Youth Icon said, ''Bajaj Allianz has also given me a large life cover insurance. I have also got my boxing fingers insured as boxing is a dangerous game and we are prone to injuries.''
