2 DAY FANUSH MAKING WORKSHOP (11th & 12th Jan’20)
January 11 @ 3:00 pm - January 12 @ 6:00 pm₹650
Fanush have been an integral part of North Kolkata’s century old Culture. Specially during Kali Puja and Diwali festival, thousand of chinese sky lanterns take the sky. However, the traditional Bengali fanush differs from the Chinese lanterns in shape size and colour. These fanushes generally are made in the conventional balloon shape but they do come in a host of different shapes, like pitchers, stars, footballs, ducks, kettles and even the planet of Saturn.
Fanush flying in Kolkata was probably initiated by the Gourishankar Dey of Darjipara of North Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1912, partcularly on the late afternoon of Kali Pujo in the Darjipara, Shimla and Beadon Street areas. But with the passage of time and introduction of other sources of entertainment, the art of fanush making and flying took the back seat.
The Dutts of Bholanath Dham on Beadon Street is an exception and they have kept the tradition alive by flying a large number of Fanush every year on the afternoon of Kali pujo. Lead by Ajoy Dutt it has been a grand spectacle and attracts hundreds of photographers. Not only photographers, but young generations are also showing interest in the art of fanush making in order to revive the art from extinction.
The Fanush usually operates in the same principle of a hot air balloon. The air inside the Fanush is heated by a cloth rag ball (locally called luti) soaked in spirit. The luti is attached to the base of the Fanush.
Banglalive.com is trying to revive the century old art of fanush making and flying by organising a 2 Day Fanush Making Workshop, a Hands-on-Session with the famous FANUSH MANUSH Sri Ajoy Dutt & other mentors Dipankar Das & Anjan Patra at FANUSH BARI in Beadon Street, North Kolkata on 11th (Saturday) & 12th January (Sunday) 2020 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
On the first day of the workshop, Ajoy Dutt will start with the tools of the trade. It will be followed by the measuring, cutting and pasting process. Participants will get to know the technical details of Fanush Making by a hands-on experience with the help of other Mentors under Ajoy Babu’s guidance. The first day will end with the completion of the basic structure of a fanush.
The second day of the Fanush Making Workshop will start with luti binding followed by the fixing of the bamboo frame and the metal wires into the Fanush. Finally the fanussh will get ready to be released.
